Looking for Lincoln

Ottawa, Il.

The site of the first Lincoln-Douglas debates were held in Ottawa Illinois, August 21, 1858. These monuments are in Washington square park. Beautiful statues of both men standing on a platform surrounded by water spouts.

Lincoln towers over the “little giant”

Stephen A. Douglas was a lawyer from Illinois and a part of the democratic party, known as the “little giant” because of his short stature. He was only 5"4. Abraham Lincoln was a part of the republican party and stood a foot taller than Douglas at 6"4. This was the first of seven sites the two held debates at, these debates propelled Lincoln into the spotlight among republicans.

Beautiful mural of Lincoln across the street from the park.
